“How do you answer these charges… Lord Baelish?”
What followed this question made a lot of viewers happy.
Arguably the best player of the game of thrones until then, Littlefinger begs for his life, tries to persuade Sansa that he loves her, but to no avail. There’s a bit of poetry here, as well, as Arya slashes his throat with the same dagger that was supposed to kill Bran.
Okay, it’s true that there were a lot of shocking moments in the same episode we learn Jon Snow’s true parentage, from Cersei blowing the Great Sept to shreds to king Tommen committing suicide. But all this was trumped by the twist that Jon isn’t Ned’s son after all, but instead the offspring of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.
6. “For the Watch”
This episode ended with the biggest cliffhanger of the entire show, and we had to wait nearly an entire year to see if Lord Commander Jon Snow was dead for good.
“For the Watch,” the mutineers said as they stuck their knives into their Lord Commander.
5. The Viper vs. The Mountain
Admit it! You wanted Oberyn to kill the Mountain, yet…
This was such an intense fight, given the stakes: Tyrion’s life, Oberyn avenging his sister Elia… And the truth is that the Viper of Dorne could have won the fight against his towering foe, but he ruined everything by insisting the Mountain confess to the rape and murder of his sister. A moment of carelessness and Oberyn got his eyes squished out of his skull.
4. Jaime loses his hand
Before this point, we are constantly told that Jaime Lannister’s one of the best swordsmen in all of Westeros. His fight against Ned Stark in the first season proved it.
Well… imagine Jaime losing his right hand. Wow!
3. The Red Wedding
“The Lannisters send their regards.”
We didn’t see this one coming. And it was such a pity. Robb’s death meant the end of the Northern rebellion, his mother’s death meant she never got to know if her children were safe (or even alive) and pregnant Talisa Stark — the woman Robb married to start this whole mess — got the most shocking moment of bloodshed. She was the first to die, stabbed multiple times in the belly by a Frey.
2. “The things I do for love…”
Game of Thrones was all too eager to show us that it didn’t plan on being your typical show. The very first episode of the series ends with Bran Stark disobeying his mother and climbing up one of Winterfell’s towers, only to catch siblings Jaime and Cersei Lannister having sex. Fearing he’ll tell everyone their secret, Jaime pushes the kid out the window.
1. Ned Stark’s execution
Ned Stark was, right from the first episode, the classic good guy. Honorable. A true knight of the realm. Also, being played by such a big star as Sean Bean, we were certain nothing could happen to him.
Right until he got his head removed from the rest of his body, we were certain some kind of Deus Ex Machina will save him… But nothing ever did.
Ned Stark lost his head, and we all understood once and for all that the game of thrones was by far the most dangerous and deadly games one could play.
Which was the most shocking Game of Thrones moment? What is the one that you’d never anticipate?
