Jane Cordery, an art teacher in Hampshire, was cleaning up the attic when she discovered the portrait of a white owl. Intrigued by the painting’s intricate brushwork, she emailed Christie’s auction house. Experts determined that the painting, titled The White Owl, was created by pre-Raphaelite artist William James Webbe, and they valued the work at over $100,000.
The painting sold last week in a Christie’s auction for $951,050, far more than the initial estimate.
