Damien Hirst to part company with his New York dealer, Larry Gagosian

After a 17 year working relationship, two of the most influential and powerful men in the international art world decided to part company. In a statement released by Hirst’s company, Science Ltd, it was announced that the two parted ways amicably.

Hirst, whose wealth is estimated at $340 million, is one of the most successful and controversial contemporary artists. In 2008, at a Sotheby’s auction, he sold an entire show, Beautiful Inside My Head Forever, raising $198 million and breaking the record for a one-artist auction.

His 2012 retrospective at the Tate Modern was the most popular solo exhibition in the history of the gallery, coming a few thousand visitors short of surpassing the 2002 Matisse-Picasso show and become the most visited exhibition in Tate Modern’s history.
